[The surgery was just as awful as Katsuki expected it to be. No, worse. When he had his arm amputated he had access to numbing and pain medicine for the after care, since it was done by someone who had access to those things. This time? He had healing magic to rely on which didn't get rid of all of the pain. And he had to have more of his arm removed in order to hook the automail directly up to his nervous system. So... one can only imagine how that went. Winry described it as him feeling anything from "notable" pain to "excruciating" pain...
He started loud and angry, complaining whenever something hurt but about midway through Katsuki went completely silent. And that's where he stayed for the rest of the operation. Deathly quiet and staring past Izuku at a random stain on the wall in front of him. The pain was so intense he felt as though if he said anything-- if he looked at anything other than the wall he'd just start screaming. At the very least, he made the installation of his new automail smooth as it could be by sitting still and quiet. And it's over as quick as Winry could get it to be. He's given a sling and told to rest, and that it should be moving in a couple of weeks and to expect full recovery and mobility to take some months.
Izuku no doubt thanks Winry enough for the both of them, as Katsuki continues to stay silent and only nods when he's told how to take care of his arm and what to expect from here out. He has nothing to say as Izuku gently ushers him from the building, and still nothing as they travel back to their quaint little home in Sunwaning. It's not until they're both actually inside their home that he finally, finally has something to say.]
...this.. th-this doesn't hurt.
[Without even stopping to take his shoes off first-- the blonde walks into their sitting room. But rather than sit he starts to pace around the room in a circle.]
It doesn't hurt. It doesn't! I-I've dealt with worse! Way worse! I can handle this! I can handle ANYTHING...!!
[He's telling himself this, with a smile that looks so terribly forced and strained, as if it'll make the pain go away. Pacing and pacing because he's so restless and isn't sure if sitting down would help or not. But surely walking around isn't really helping either....]
[Izuku has some idea of what to expect, having talked to Winry and tried to look into prosthetics. Getting information from her about automail and the surgery involved. He's no medical expert, and he was still new and figuring out his abilities here to be able to help with healing. But he is there at his friend's side through the surgery, and to assist him home afterwards, once Bakugo can head back and rest there.
And, well, if anyone knows Bakugo well enough to know he's psyching himself up, that he is trying to get through this in his own way, it's Izuku. Even if he might be a little bemused at the other claiming to have been through worse. He doesn't want to think on that moment when he apparently wondered if the other was actually dead. So he tries to focus on now, as he removes his boots and follows the other inside.]
I didn't say you couldn't handle this. Winry said to rest, so I'm not sure if you wanted to sit or lie down or something? Do you need anything, Kacchan?
[He knows the other didn't say anything about him not being able to handle this pain, but he just felt like he had to announce to the world that he was alright. To remind himself that Bakugo Katsuki can take on any challenge-- even something as intense as his nerves being cut into and hooked up to mechanics.
Katsuki shakes his head perhaps a little too intensely in response to Izuku, not pausing to even look at the other boy.]
Can't sit. I-if.. if I stop moving, I'll puke.
[His body wants so bad to just release all of this pent up energy and adrenaline somehow. By puking, or screaming, or doing something violent. So instead, he continues to pace like a nervous dog as he tries to rack his distracted brain to think of something that Izuku could do to help. Anything.]
[Izuku just wants to help. Feel useful somehow. So much that Bakugo has been dealing with has been things that the younger teen has felt so helpless to support him through. He tries. It just doesn't always feel like he's really contributing much. But he does head to get some ice from the freezer and refills the ice tray, bringing it in a glass for Bakugo to use however he might need, along with getting a bucket, just in case he might feel nauseous.]
[Katsuki nods, thankful for his best friend being so quick. He can't help but feel guilty, too, with how much Izuku has had to take care of him lately... but it's not like he could predict that stupid illness that took over last month. If he could, he would've scheduled his surgery another week or two out at least. Maybe a month. But he was also awfully impatient to just get it over with, too... at least, after this heals, he should be at 100% again.
Maybe even more with all the gadgets and things he can do with his new arm!!
For now, though, he is definitely.. nowhere close. And he holds the cold glass against his chest carefully. Holding it near where his metal socket attaches to the skin. Thankfully it's on the way to healing up nicely with the help of Winry's healing magic, but it still hurt. The metal was heavy, and tugged on the wound slightly with it's weight. It's why he had it held up in a sling as to not pull on it too much-- though the pressure from the sling hurt as well.
Ugh. At least he can tell people about how strong willed he was. Being able to stand this pain and go through that surgery without passing out, somehow.]
Th-thanks. And.. sorry.
[His words are a bit short, and spoken through grit teeth as he continues to hold the freezing glass against his sore skin.]
I ain't this useless, usually. It's just... t-timing.
[Katsuki can't help but feel embarrassed and a bit ashamed. Izuku having to see him so low like this... but this was part of Heroism. Wasn't it? Getting injuries and surgeries to fix said injuries. And he's definitely, at least, learned a damn lesson or two about going too far in battle.]
You don't have to apologize. I know this has been a lot. You've been dealing with being sick, with surgery. It's okay to need support at times like that. It doesn't mean you're useless.
[Izuku probably could stand to give himself the patience and understanding he reserves for others. That same reassurance. But it's hard to change his being harder on himself after so long. After so long being bullied. Still, he tries to reassure the blonde, thinking for a moment before briefly heading to the kitchen and returning with one of the cold packs from the freezer for first aid. It's wrapped in a paper towel, so there's at least something between it and the skin, handing that to replace the ice. It might be better than the ice being straight against Bakugo's skin where it meets the metal.]
[Katsuki retorts with that, but he knows that Izuku is right. He can't help it when he needs help, himself. He's just so tired of being a Hero that needs the help... he's impatient and wanting to be intimidating and cool again. Like this? He feels like a helpless little baby and he hates it.
But at the same time, he's so grateful Izuku was here. The other boy, without even asking, goes to fetch something that will work better for what Katsuki wanted ice for and he hands off the glass so he can take the cold pack and press it where it hurts the most. Nodding a little in thanks, before opening his mouth to complain:]
This shit better work. After everything it took to get here.
[The "shit" he's talking about is obviously the arm and it's little mechanisms that he asked Winry to include. He won't tell Izuku but he's admittedly terrified that it won't do what he wants it to, or he won't be able to move it at all. Only time will tell... time and rest. Rest that's going to be extremely hard for him to get.]
I know. But this isn't forever. Just give yourself a bit of time to recover. You'll be back sparring with me and doing Quests soon enough. This is just temporary.
[Izuku puts the cup down on a coaster at the table in the lounge, shifting next to the other and putting a hand on Bakugo's shoulder. This wouldn't be easy, it would take time, but he's also sure that if anyone could manage to pull through it, it would be Bakugo. His friend was strong and stubborn, determined enough that he's sure that the blonde would pull through. It's just a matter of getting there, time.]
[When Izuku touches at his shoulder, Katsuki looks over at his friend with an expression that can only really be described as tired... maybe a little disappointed, too. This was probably going to be his toughest challenge yet. Adjusting to a whole new limb, like this. Waiting weeks or months before he can fight again. But... he was ready to take it on. As much as he was suffering right now-- it won't be forever.
Just as Izuku says.]
...you're gonna hate sparring with me. Gettin' punched by a giant hunk of metal ain't gonna feel very good.
[Talking about violence always cheers the blonde up, and his tired expression already shifts to a small grin.]
I need help figuring out what to do for him, and I want to do it a month early so it's not last minute. Should we throw a party like we did for you? I doubt the guy's ever had a proper birthday party.
Edited (i forgot shotos birthday was in january... ) 2025-12-01 04:07 (UTC)
but ah! yeah! i guess we can ask if he'd like a party or not? i know he's usually quieter and all, so if that's not his thing, we can still do something else. this way, we have time to figure something out and get him really awesome presents!
I kind of wanted to do a surprise for him... but I guess we should ask instead, huh?
A surprise party might end up too much for someone who hasn't really celebrated before and I don't know if he'll hate it or like it either. We might be together but I still haven't figured out how to guess if he'll like something or not. Usually I assume he's like me and will share whatever opinion I have. But then he'll surprise me and end up liking something I hate.
Anyway. I know for sure I'll have to make soba for dinner that day. No matter what we end up doing.
yeah, we don't want to overwhelm him if a big party might be too much. maybe something smaller with a few closer friends? that might be easier, to kinda ease him into it that he's more comfortable having a bigger gathering another time?
but yeah, definitely soba, i know that's his favourite.
No! A dinky bowl wouldn't be enough! I'm supposed to give him the BEST presents because I'm the BEST boyfriend!
[something something katsuki's the best at everything something something--]
I don't even think 30 gifts is enough either! I should bump it up to 50 because he deserves everything on the goddamn planet!!
[Honestly, Katsuki is really stressed out about gift giving. There's Shoto's birthday, yes, but he also has to get him something meaningful for Christmas too. It's a couple's holiday, after all....]
i'm just saying, as long as it's from friends he cares about, i doubt he'll mind so much what we get him. i think you're overthinking this, kacchan.....!
[But. Well. Bakugo has always been competitive. It's not really that surprising if it shows up with something like gifts for a friend. Or, in this case, boyfriend. Probably not helped that this is his first, so he's still figuring out how that works.]
um. how about we both come up with a list together? see what we think he might need or want? what he likes?
[Izuku has 6 gifts waiting by the time he's awake. 4 wood rabbit-print hagoita; a wooden box of Karuta cards; books 1 through 12 of Anp*nman Dynaman; a Taisho-era outfit in greens (sorry his gifts have an old man's tastes...); a Silver Age All Might Labuwu in gold; and 2 (hopefully!) lucky omamori to bring him health throughout the year.
[we might thread out gift giving but i wanted to list everything in case we don't and/or so i have a reference and can just link to this comment in the thread GHLSKGS
It's Christmas morning and the boys are all exchanging gifts with one another. Izuku gets a big bag from Katsuki!! Inside, there are two outfits: this and this. Both have been picked to give Izuku a little bit of fashion in his wardrobe, and because Izuku mentioned clothes as a good gift. There's also a new coat for the winter season, for when he ventures out to Nightwake or the Winter segment.
There's also two All Might Labuwus from Katsuki's collection (he had four All Mights-- two Big-Mights and two Small-Mights. He gives Izuku one of each, and they're both dressed up in little Santa outfits.) And three thick, high quality notebooks with a nice fountain pen to go with.
One last item is a slip of paper. An "IOU" for a Wishing Room with a small explanation of what it is. When he has the coins ac rewards for it, he can regain Izuku's whole dorm room filled to the brim with All Might merch for him and have it be attached to their home. He saw this offer at Rikki's, and immediately kept in mind to buy it as soon as he can. So, very soon, everyone can see how insane Izuku really is about his love for All Might--]
[No, this is cute! He'll love it. Mostly All Mights because. Of course. The nerd. But new clothes are never a bad idea, especially the coat. And notebooks are always going to be a good gift for him with how much he writes all the time. All of this is great! And later getting his beloved All Might merch back! Everyone else just like okay....yeah...he really likes this All Might guy.....]
[Katsuki'd been feeling better lately, and he decided it was time to get down to business. He'd wanted to make a Hero agency basically since he arrived, and finally he was getting the steps down to do it. First: the license. Then: the office. With the help from the city, he was able to locate an office in his budget that was willing to let him rent same month. His budget wasn't huge, but it was enough for a two story building with a few different rooms. Just enough for a start, at least.
He felt pretty damn proud of himself, honestly. And he was practically sparkling when he arrives home with the keys in his pocket. He looks around the house for the first person he could find-- excited to show off their new HQ. And that's when he finds Deku in the tea room.]
Deku! Get your shoes on! You gotta see the new HQ!
[Izuku blinks when Bakugo returns and seems so excited about something. He knows they had been talking about the idea. That his friend had been considering it for a while. But he wasn't sure just how far along things were in getting everything all set up for it to come to fruition. He glances up when the other enters, hair shifting before he all but bounds over excitedly.]
Huh? You got it?! Yeah, I wanna see! Let's go!
[He beams, all but leaping after the other after clasping his hands in excitement, heading to get his shoes and keys.]
[Katsuki leads the way, grinning ear to ear as the two of them make their way back to Nightwake. The building isn't exactly right in the heart of the city, but it's not in a bad area either. It's a little close to the outskirts near Sunwaning, and it's an old but nice looking two story building made of brick on the outside. It's a bit on the thin side and right in between two taller, bigger buildings but Katsuki likes that it's a bit hidden this way. Unassuming.
He stops in front of the building once they arrive, and turns around to see Izuku's reaction. His arms folded over his chest proudly.]
[Izuku is excited too, that Bakugo is this ecstatic is making him even more so. Like it's contagious. He grins right back, letting the blond lead the way. Following right along. He's all but bounding next to Bakugo as the other leads him there, glancing up and grinning at it. Even just seeing the outside. It's....theirs. Their hero agency. Maybe he'd imagined something like this before. But now they were really making it a reality. Bakugo really wanted this. With him. With him.]
This one? Awesome! You're....you're really doing it! This is it. This is the start!
